Who would have believed it just a few months ago? Those who vowed to oppose the president on just about anything, those who couldn't imagine they would agree with Trump on anything are now applauding his Syria missile strikes.
So we know what it takes to get liberal support: just bypass the constitution and fire some missiles.
It was a point of consensus among those opposed to Donald Trump. The same man who was once seen as a threat to US democracy and world peace. The fact that this megalomaniac “pussy-grabbing,” Muslim banning ex-reality TV star controls the world’s most lethal military arsenal was once seen as a chilling prospect. Opposition to his policies among liberals was unquestionable.
However, it only took liberals less than three months to completely change their view.
The press he denounced as liars and “enemies of the people” are now eating out of his hands. “I think Donald Trump became President of the United States,” said CNN commentator Fareed Zakaria in response to the Syria bombing. A New York Times article by Mark Sandler was titled: “On Syria Attack, Trump’s Heart Came First.”
So the man who once bragged that he would tell five-year-old Syrian refugees to their faces that the US would not offer them safety, is suddenly "driven by his heart."
All around Europe, liberal and conservative columnists and politicians applauded Trump’s bombing raid, because apparently, he is now showing leadership.
Now, let’s be clear. The gassing of those children in Syria, and the unspeakably deaths they suffered, are despicable crimes. President Assad is a blood-soaked tyrant who deserves to spend his final days rotting in a jail cell. However, in spite of my deepest hopes, I find it hard to believe that Donald Trump is a credible savior of Syria’s children.
The history of western military intervention in the Arab world is a bloody failure. Who would have believed that the person to buck this trend of failed, bloody US military interventions in the Arab world would be Trump?
Trump is now stronger, he is emboldened. His critics have praised him, his appalling approval ratings will now surely edge up. Further military action will surely follow. Why wouldn’t they? He received praise for bypassing the constitution, so why wouldn’t he apply the same strategy again? His extra-constitutional military intervention has been legitimized. A man who backs torture and castigated his predecessors for not stealing Iraq and Syria’s oil is literally being rehabilitated by the liberals as a man of compassion and strength, with the resolve that Obama lacked.
One of the main objections to a Trump presidency was that he was unstable, with authoritarian instincts, and would disregard constitutional norms. This expectation has now turned out to be true. It's the applause from his one-time opponents that is surprising.
